Maida Vale
The project at Maida Vale began with research into the house's history. The Grade II listed flat — part of the Bishop of London's Paddington Estate, laid out in the early 1850s — had been stripped of most of its original fabric through successive conversions, and more recently over-stripped again, leaving little 'original' left to restore.
How do we return authenticity to a listed house whose historic fabric has already been erased? Rather than feign a faithful restoration, the removed Georgian features — decorative mouldings, sash windows, lime plaster — are reconstructed beyond their original level of ornamentation, remaking the house as a place between fact and fiction.
Against this reconstructed character, new oak panelling keeps the rooms from being defined by any single style. A powder room lined in the same oak reads as a walk-in cabinet between living space and kitchen, while a new portal connects the two directly.
The house remains a layered idea of itself — an enhanced self-portrait in which our sense of a 'true origin' is distorted. Perhaps it is here that authenticity in architecture can truly exist.
